Dear Polo NSW Members,

The Board of Polo NSW invites submissions from interested parties on the “Future of Polo.”

Submissions are invited on all aspects of the sport to assist in the development of a blueprint for polo over the next decade.

Polo NSW President Jeremy Bayard said, “Polo is experiencing considerable structural challenges at all levels.”

“We need to assess the effectiveness of the current structure and whether it remains fit for purpose.”

“In recent years, we have seen the decline of many country clubs, a diminishing Australian professional playing cohort, fewer pony makers, and significant compression of handicaps.”

“There is the constant battle to keep entry-level polo affordable.

“There is a looming ‘black hole’ of Australian players on 3 or 4 goals or more — 90% of our high-handicap players are 40 years or older.

“How do we prepare polo for the next decade and beyond without having to rely on imported players?

“The current calendar structure has emerged from the traditional weekend club tournament system, which places enormous pressure on infrastructure and resources.

“Is there a better way to structure our calendar, and even our club system, to allow for more efficient, cost-effective, and less impactful use of infrastructure?

“Do more flexible work practices now allow for more mid-week polo and league-style tournaments?

“What is the best way to bring new people and young players into the sport?

“While there are challenges to overcome, there are also terrific opportunities to embrace.

“The sport is in part healthy and growing; we have a very active and supportive patron cohort and an increasing number of exceptional facilities.

“Polo is full of people with ideas and opinions. Polo NSW wants to hear them.”
