As the first chukka began in the 12 goal JK Mackay Memorial Trophy Final, the predicted rain came down but fortunately, is wasn't that heavy and we were able to complete to Championship match. An hour or two later, it wouldn't have happened !!
Today's final was played between the Town and Country team made up of Jeremy Bayard (0 goals), Ed Thirwell (1), Alec White (5) and Captain Sam Hopkinson (5) and their opponents were from just down Triangle Lane, the Kurri Burri team made up of James Marshall (0), Lachie Gilmore (4), Ed Mandie (1) and Captain Tom Hunt (6)
For both Teams it had been a hard road to make the final and this was always going to be a very tough, close contest, and we weren't disappointed.
Lachie Gilmore opened the scoring for Kurri Burri and bagged a pair against a single goal to Alec White to give Kurri Burri the lead after the first chukka. In the second chukka, it was the two opposing high goalers that kept the scoreboard ticking over with Sam Hopkinson scoring twice, matched by Tom Hunt doing the same for a 1 goal advantage to Kurri Burri at the end of the second chukka.
Strong defence in the third chukka saw Town and Country held scoreless whilst Ed Mandie added one to the team total for a 5-3 goal lead to Kurri Burri.
In the fourth chukka, both teams traded goals, Tom Hunt for Kurri Burri and Ed Thirwell for Town and Country to see us head into the final chukka with a scoreline favouring Kurri Burri 6-4.
But an early goal to Alec White and some strong defense saw Town and Country draw level and then with less than 30 seconds to go a crossing penalty 2 was awarded to Kurri Burri and Lachie Gilmore calmly stepped up to secure the title for the Kurri Burri Team with a final score line of 7 goals to 6 goals.
Congratulations to Kurri Burri and coach
Glen Gilmore
Champion Pony was awarded to 'Hope' played by Tom Hunt in the final chukka.
